Psst! I Have a Secret Weapon…

Recently a friend asked me why I always seemed so happy?  She stated that there are many bad things that happen in the news each day. I agreed! There are tragedies that are always occurring in our personal lives, our communities and our world.

But, I have a “secret weapon”.  One that my mother taught me years ago.  Mom said if I would do something special each day for someone else, then my life would be joyous and I would have a boatload of friends!

This advice was given when I was in High School.  High School is such a difficult time and peer pressure, how one looks, the clothes you wear, the group you are associated with, are all MAJOR big deals.  I saw myself as too tall, very skinny (imagine), pimples, hair that had a mind of its own and generally just no confidence!

I decided to activate my “secret weapon” and before long, things began to happen.  It was so easy and took very little effort.  Even though school was a long time ago, I have shared my “secret weapon” with over 10,000 boys and girls who have gone through our etiquette training. Do one thing special for someone each day and your life will change.

Today, that one thing a day can be a telephone call to someone you haven’t talked to in a while; a birthday card, herbs or flowers from your garden,  food that you cooked and have enough to share, a note congratulating someone on a special accomplishment, a book that you enjoyed and chose to pass on, dinner or an activity with a friend, sending an article that appeared in a newspaper or electronically that is of interest to one of your friends, taking an elder person to an appointment or to lunch, etc., etc., etc.

All of us are so involved with our lives that many times we simply forget to think past ourselves.

Yes, it is true! My “secret weapon” continues to make me smile. Try it yourself and ….

that will Make Momma Happy!

Changing Lives..

We have had so many graduating classes over the years and during our 5 days working closely together, new friendships are cemented.  But friendships are like flowers; they constantly need fertilizer.  So, here at The American School of Protocol, I began a new procedure several months ago.

I decided that I would select one class of graduates each week and personally call each one to touch base.  How exciting these last two months have been with wonderful stories from so many graduates.

One is actively working with children on an Indian Reservation, another with autistic children, another in a drug lock-down facility, an etiquette cruise ship director, a children’s dress shop owner who teaches etiquette classes in her store, an attorney who donates time to work with wards of the state, a dozen or more graduates who teach on college campuses, several graduates who write for publications online and in print, and the list goes on and on.

I heard stories about graduates who have experienced life changes such as births, divorce and deaths and are currently not able to teach.   There were also graduates who have been greatly affected by the economy in their areas.  Regardless of the reason, almost all stated that their training helped them focus on opportunities that improved their visions for the future.  To all these remarkable graduates I say ‘ hang tight’. You remain in my heart and as you know, we are always here to help and to counsel. That’s what we do!

What a fabulous difference our graduates are making in their communities whether they are teaching or not. Our school is about changing lives and what a wonderful feeling and honor it is to hear these life changing stories from them.

Do drop by our Facebook Fan page to meet a few of them or perhaps you are ready to change your own life. Our next 5 Day Children’s Certification training is May 2-6, 2010 in Atlanta.  We would love to have you join us!

and that’s What Makes Momma Happy!

What Makes A Man?

Every now and then I read something that simply warms the cockles of my heart.  An article appeared in the Atlanta Journal, Sports section, March 28, about a young man, Jason Heyward, who made the Braves team and will be playing right fielder, opening day.

As you read about Jason’s family and their reaction to their son’s success, you get the sense that this is a pretty tight family with loads of values.  Conversations end with phrases like “Love you, Dad”.

Hitting coach Terry Pendleton said to Jason’s father, “You have done an excellent job with that young man”.  Those are words that all parents like to hear.  But the best comment came from Jason’s grandfather who said many times to this young man growing up, “Manners take you where money won’t!”

What a quote and certainly one…that Makes Momma Happy!

It’s all about safety

rio speaksThis is just a little story that I love to share.... and it's true!

A few years ago there were several occurrences of house fires in the Atlanta area .  Each were families with young children and each had the bedrooms on the second floor.  Though all family members were saved from the fires, when interviewed, the parents responded that they had never taught their children safety skills. What to do in case of a fire? What to do if someone needs help or is hurt? Have you?

At that precise moment, a light went on at The American School of Protocol. We must include safety skills in our curriculum! Children need to know what to do and how to act in the face of emergencies. So the journey began and the course was developed.  There is even a piece of the course offered to children as young as 3 years old....but this story does not end here.

With the new course in place, a young boy named David attended one of our classes. A few days after he had successfully graduated, with certificate in hand, he became ill and had to stay home from school.  David was alone in his room when he heard a crash and discovered that his mother had fallen down the stairs and was lying unconscious.  Because of his training, David knew just what to do and calmly called for help which saved his mother's life!

We thought that was such a good story and one that should be shared.  We wanted more children  to know what to do in emergency situations so we published a book! The book is called "Rio Speaks"

Share our passion!

Eating ParfaitWelcome to the 'Manners Make Momma Happy!' site. We are so happy to have you here and want to take this opportunity to tell you what we are all about. For those of you who already follow us on Facebook or even Twitter, this site will have a slightly different angle.

On Facebook we are an aggregator of things related to early childhood learning and teaching with a slant towards etiquette and manners. Since we are always reading to see what the current issues and thoughts about etiquette and manners are, we thought you might enjoy if we share what we like with you. On Facebook you may find posts about interesting table designs, a cute song to help children learn to tie their shoes or an article about those fabulous teen years!

But this site, 'Manners Make Momma Happy!' is where we plan to share our personal passion. The passion that flows right through our certification training classes. Right through our staff and right through the graduates that pass our doors!

At The American School of protocol we believe that with proper character education including manners, etiquette and life skills, every child has a chance at success.   These skills equip them to handle so many life situations and to handle them with poise and confidence.  This is why Peggy Newfield has dedicated her career to teaching children these skills.  She then set her mind on developing curriculums that would enable others to teach children in the same way.

If you are a parent, teacher, relative, want-to-be consultant or just someone who cares about our children, we hope this site will instill some of our passion in you!

.....because that is what Makes Momma Happy!
