Whether you are dining with your boss, friends or acquaintances, there are certain boundaries in conversation that should never be crossed. Having an intriguing conversation usually makes the meal even more enjoyable, however pairing the best food in the world with inappropriate dinner chatter can end up leaving you with a bad taste in your mouth.
Here are a few tips to help you feel more comfortable with dinner-table conversation.
Mom always said – Never discuss sex, money, religion, personal matters or politics.
No one wants to hear… About your divorce, money woes or latest operation, save that for close friends and family.
Know your Audience. If you are not exactly sure of who you are sitting with at a table, be cautious of what you say and how you say it.
Don’t be Overbearing. Don’t push your opinions or beliefs on others. Not everyone has the same kind of opinion about certain subjects as you do.
Don’t be Dull. If you’re going to have a conversation make it worthwhile and find something interesting to discuss. When in doubt discuss traveling, food, or movies. It is also a wise idea to listen to local, state and national news so that you are informed on current events.
Know when to Escape. If someone asks you a question that is ill-mannered, simply change the subject. You can always respond with, “Now that’s an interesting question to ask”. If the focus doesn’t change you can kindly excuse yourself.
